Melissa Etheridge – I Need To Wake Up

If you’ve seen that controversial documentary by Al Gore “An Inconvenient Truth,” then you probably heard this song already. It’s not as popular as some of the songs in GT Watchlist, as evidenced by its poor showing in Youtube. But after watching it, I was just moved in such a way that I decided to do something about what it’s practically screaming at me to do, and that is to save the environment. If GT can help mother nature in any way by showing you this video, then you can also do your part just by telling your friends about it.

Inconvenient Truth

Here are a few trivia I want to share which I learned by watching An Inconvenient Truth and this music video, all due to the Global Warming phenomenon:

  • Polar bears are drowning in the arctics, because now they have to swim great distances in order to find food.
  • There will be no more glaciers in Glacier National Park(Montana, USA) within this decade.
  • If the glaciers continue to melt, most of New York, Beijing, and even Manila will be underwater in the next few years.
  • The amount of CO2(the gas linked to global warming) in the atmosphere is in its highest now in the last 650,000 years, and I mean NOW, while you are reading this.
  • A hurricane happened in the South Atlantic in 2004, the first ever in recorded history. The South Atlantic is that expanse of ocean in between North and South America and the south pole.
  • I contribute to global warming heavily just by not turning off my laptop the whole night.

The big amount of CO2 in the atmosphere does not allow the sun’s energy to radiate back to space. All the heat is trapped in the Earth, and this causes glaciers to melt, winds and ocean currents to go haywire, and people with no proper shelter and insulation to either die in a heat wave or freeze in a winter night. Something we can do thus is to moderate and control our C02 emmissions by taking mass transit like the bus or the train, walking instead of taking the car, refrain from watching telenovelas (not only does this waste valuable energy resources but our precious time as well), and using energy efficient appliances like that new ref or that revolutionary light bulb. If you would research more and are really serious about it as I am, you would find many other ways, and small ways at that, to allay the effects of global warming.

Finally, here is Melissa Etheridge and her song “I Need To Wake Up.” When I first heard it I thought it was a male singing, because Melissa’s voice has that timbre sported by rock band vocalists. I was just a little surprised though, and in the end I felt everything sounded right.

Have I been sleeping?
I’ve been so still
Afraid of crumbling
Have I been careless?
Dismissing all the distant rumblings
Take me where I am supposed to be
To comprehend the things that I can’t see

Cause I need to move
I need to wake up
I need to change
I need to shake up
I need to speak out
Something’s got to break up
I’ve been asleep
And I need to wake up
Now

And as a child
I danced like it was 1999
My dreams were wild
The promise of this new world
Would be mine
Now I am throwing off the carelessness of youth
To listen to an inconvenient truth

That I need to move
I need to wake up
I need to change

I need to shake up
I need to speak out
Something’s got to break up
I’ve been asleep
And I need to wake up
Now

I am not an island
I am not alone
I am my intentions
Trapped here in this flesh and bone

Oh I need to move
I need to wake up
I need to change
I need to shake up
I need to speak out
Something’s got to break up
I’ve been asleep
And I need to wake up
Now

I want to change
I need to shake up
I need to speak out
Oh, Something’s got to break up
I’ve been asleep
And I need to wake up
Now

  1. If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.
